Tutors

Tutor System and Purpose

In order for international students to understand Japanese lifestyle and customs after arriving in Japan and achieve results in their studies and research, they need detailed support tailored to their individual circumstances. It is difficult for faculty members alone to provide this kind of support, and it may be more effective to get help from senior students. This is why the tutor system was established. Given this background, it can be said that this system is most effective when a relationship of trust and cooperation is built between faculty members, tutors and international students.

The eligible students for this system are foreign students who are planning to enroll at our university for more than three months and who have been issued a residence card. In principle, the applicable period and number of hours are as follows:

  • Undergraduate international students: 1 year after enrollment (80 hours of support)
  • Graduate international students: 6 months in Japan (20 hours of support)
  • MEXT research students: 6 months after arrival in Japan (20 hours of support)
  • All international students who plan to be enrolled for 3 months or more and have been issued a residence card: 1 month after arriving in Japan (15 hours of support)

Tutor's role

The specific roles of tutors are summarized in the following three points:

As a guide

Provide guidance to ensure that the student's studies and research at TUAT go smoothly.

As a senior

Explain matters relating to schoolwork that international students do not fully understand, and correct the student's compositions as an advisor when he/she is writing up experiments and practical reports to improve his/her Japanese-language abilities.

As a friend

Explain facets of Japanese daily life, culture and society in an easy-to-understand way, and occasionally ponder things together with international students. Compare and discuss international students' home country culture and society, and strive to deepen mutual understanding.
